Dr. Alton's Mother Died Friday - Came From Germany When a Girl. Mary M., relict of the late Frederick Alton, and mother of R.W. Alton of Portland, died at her home in Lansing last Saturday morning, aged 78 years. Pneumonia was the direct cause of her death, although her health had been poor for some time. The forepart of last week she started up-town at Lansing, missed the car and walked, and did the same thing returning. She contracted a cold which resulted in pneumonia. Mrs. Alton was a native of Germany but came to Saline, Washtenaw county, Mich., when she was a girl. Here she married to Frederick Alton and moved to Lansing at such an early date that her oldest daughter was the first white child born in Lansing, the township in which the city of Lansing is situated, and resided there up to the time of her death. By the passing of his mother, Dr. Alton is the only surviving member of a once large family, the members of which have been well and favorably known in Lansing. Mrs. Alton was a devout Presbyterian and when able was active in charitable work and a most estimable and much-loved lady. Funeral services were conducted from her home on Monday afternoon last, Dr. and Miss Ethel Alton attending. Additional Comments: Interment Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Michigan.
