GILLESPIE G. A. GILLESPIE was born at Sparta, Livingston county, N.Y., May 27, 1830. With his parents he came to Michigan in 1832, settling at Tecumseh, Lenawee county. Michigan was yet a territory. In 1854 he went to California overland, returning the the same manner in four years. Again in 1860 he took the overland route to California with a drove of horses, returning in a year via the isthmus. He expected to again make the trip, but the civil war coming on, the Indians becoming troublesome and from past experience with them he thought it best not to return. In 1866 he moved to Mason and engaged in the drug business for four years, then moved to Eaton Rapids where he engaged in the same business for another four years. In 1874 he removed to his farm in Alaiedon township where he lived until three years ago when he again took up his residence in Mason. On Jan 3, 1905 he passed away, the result of paralysis and general debility. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. H. Simmons, were held at the home on north Jefferson street on Jan. 5th with interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. Mr. GILLESPIE was married to Kate E. DURYEA at Tecumseh in 1864. One son, Geo. H. GILLESPIE who lives on the old homestead, and his widow survive him. He was a life-long democrat and held several minor offices in this township.
