GUSTAVUS GILLESPIE Catherine Eliza DURYEA was born at Nunda, N.Y., July 23, 1844. She was married to Gustavus A. GILLESPIE June 7, 1864, at Tecumseh, Mich., from which place they went to Eaton Rapids, where Mr. Gillespie engaged in the drug business. From Eaton Rapids they came to Mason, where he was engaged for some time in the same business, afterwards moving to a farm north of the city and later to the farm in the same neighborhood which was their home for about 25 years and which they left about four years ago, moving into the city, their son taking charge of the farm. Mrs. GILLESPIE became a member of the Presbyterian church at Eaton Rapids soon after moving there, transferring her membership to the Mason Presbyterian church in 1879, where for more than 26 years, she has been an interested, faithful, consistent member, delighting in the preaching and prayer service when it has been possible for her to be in attendance. For many years she has been a patient sufferer form the trouble which caused her death. Aug. 22 she went to Harper hospital, Detroit, where she underwent an operation, an later another, in the vain hope that it might prolong her live. She died at the hospital Dec.22, 1905 and the funeral was held from the old home north of town, Dec. 24, the interment being in Maple Grove cemetery, beside her husband, who died the 3rd of last January, Rev. W. H. Simmons, her pastor conducting the service. Besides the only son, Geo. H., who lives on the old home farm, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. WARD of Jackson and Mrs. CULBERTSON of Muir, and two brothers, Wm DURYEA of Jackson and Samuel DURYEA of Elks Falls, Kansas. The fight for life was long and hard and every attention and service was rendered, in the hope that it might avail, but this was not to be. Besides her immediate relatives, her loss is mourned by a wide circle of friends.
