Miles (1859 – 1911) Source: Ingham County Democrat, Mason Michigan, July 5, 1911 (page 5, col. 4) “OBITUARY OF FRANK B. MILES Frank B. Miles was born on the 28th day of August 1859, in Somerset, Hillsdale county, and died at Kalamazoo June 29, 1911, of neuralgia of the heart, aged 51 years. He was married to Lillian Peters of Olivet in 1852, who died 12 years ago, leaving the care and responsibility of their two sons, Rollin L. and Colton B. Miles for him to bear alone. The greater part of his life has been spent in the vicinity of Mason and Leslie, having been located in Kalamazoo only since January last, where he was engaged in the insurance business. He was a Forester in the Aurelius Chapter and a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Mason. For several years he has made his home with his sister, Mrs. James Gallup, of this city, who did all in her power to make life happy for him. Besides his two sons he leaves four sisters and a multitude of friends to mourn his loss. His life work was devoted to his sons, doing all that honest effort and tender care could do to increase their usefulness and fit them for the earthly struggle. Funeral services were held at Olivet last Saturday afternoon and he was laid to rest by the side of his departed wife in the Olivet cemetery.” Transcribed by Richard Lundeen, September 23, 2000 News Item on Death of Frank Miles, August 28, 1911 Source: Kalamazoo Gazette, Saturday, July 1, 1911 “PREDICTS OWN DEATH BEFORE HIS TWO SONS AT KALAMAZOO HOTEL ‘Boys, I feel as though I am not going to live much longer, ‘ was the statement made by Frank Miles Thursday afternoon, just a few minutes before he died from an attack of heart disease. ‘I can feel another attack on my heart coming on and I am afraid that this will be the last one.’ His sons, Roland and Colton, who were with him at the time protested that there was no danger of his succumbing from an attack of heart disease. A few minutes later he started to his feet but sank back again and a moment later died. Mr. Miles was a traveling man and had installed his temporary headquarters in the Kalamazoo hotel. Besides his two sons he is survived by a brother and four sisters. They are Lee Miles [sic, actually a nephew] of Vermontville, Mrs. James Gallup of Mason, Mrs. Orvil Lombard of Leslie, Mrs. Arthur Van Patten of Wayland and Mrs. A. U. Carr of Bellaire. A short funeral service will be held this morning at Joldersma’s chapel at 730 Portage street, Dr. A. Gaylord Slocum of Kalamazoo college officiating. The body will be taken to Olivet this morning for burial.” Transcribed by Richard Lundeen, September 23, 2000 Obituary for Frank Miles (1859 – 1911) Source: The Olivet Optic, Olivet Michigan, Thursday, July 6, 1911 “OBITUARIES - FRANK MILES On Saturday morning the remains of Frank Miles were brought from Kalamazoo to Olivet accompanied by the two sons of the deceased, a nephew, Lee, of Vermontville, and three sisters, whose names we could not learn. Brief services were held at the undertaking parlors, conducted by Rev. A. F. Skeele, and the burial took place in the village cemetery. The deceased formerly lived in Walton, his parents owning what was then known as the Bosworth farm in the Bosworth district. He married Miss Lillie Peters, a sister of Mrs. Jared Bradley, and they moved west for a time, then returning to Leslie, Michigan, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Peters twelve years ago. The two sons Rollie and Colton are both students at Kalamazoo College. In speaking of his death June 29th, the Kalamazoo Press said: ‘Mr. Frank Miles, aged 52 years, died suddenly this afternoon at his rooms in the Kalamazoo Hotel on east Main Street of heart failure. He was a traveling salesman and was well known in the city. His death came as a great surprise as he was apparently in good health this morning.’ Mr. and Mrs. Byron Peters, of Charlotte, and Mr. and Mrs. Truman Peters, of Battle Creek, attended the funeral.” Transcribed by Richard Lundeen, September 23, 2000
