The cemetery had been ignored, neglected, and truly abandoned since the 1940's. Both the public easement and cemetery grounds were nearly impassable. Tombstones had become buried, toppled over, broken, or completely covered with field grass and brush. Many local residents did not know DuBois Cemetery existed even though they drove by it on a daily basis. In October of 2007, after media coverage and strong urging from Township residents, descendants, and cleanup volunteers, the Alaiedon Township Board stated that they would not allow DuBois Cemetery to revert back to its previous condition.
