ALWARD, Catharine Ann
Catharine Ann Travis Wing Taylor Alward was born in 1812 and she died 02/02/1889, Saturday, 3pm,
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Irish. The funeral service took place at Dubois School
House, Tuesday at 2 p.m., per the Ingham County Democrat.  Catharine was born in Washington,
Berkshire County, New York in 1812.  She was married three times.  Her first marriage was to
Ephraim Wing (born July 27, 1774-ca 1852).  Ephraim was born in Harwich, Massachusetts.  His first
marriage was to Abigail Bryant in 1794.  He then married Catharine on 09/30/1830 and they had
nearly a 39-year age difference.  According to family members, Catharine and her husband Ephraim first came to
Michigan in 1852 from Naples, Ontario County, New York with their young children in a
wagon drawn by a pair of oxen and, for a time at least, settled in St. John’s, Michigan.  Although they
were not the first arrivals in this part of Michigan, they were among the early settlers.  Catharine and
Ephraim had five children: Harvey Pettibone, Polly Maria, Mary Ann, Emily H., and William.  Two of
their sons fought in the Civil War; William died in the battle of Petersburg, Virginia, days before the
war ended.  Another son, Harvey, survived the war and went on to have a family of his own, all of
whom lived in the area.  Catharine and Ephraim’s daughter, Polly Maria, married Robert Fletcher and
they had twelve children, many of whom lived and died in Michigan.  One of the children was
William A. Fletcher who married Jane S. Bump.  William and Jane were the parents of the three
Fletcher children buried in DuBois Cemetery: Ida A., Judson A., and Lucella M. Fletcher.  William
was the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court and his salary is quoted in Pioneer History of
Ingham County as being $1600 per year.  Catharine’s second marriage, after Ephraim’s death, was to
Levi Taylor.  After Levi Taylor’s death, Catharine then married Henry C. Alward.  Henry Alward had
been married two times before.  His first wife was Nancy Hull and his second wife was Rhoda Dennis.
There were no children from the later marriages of Catharine.  Catharine shares the family monument
with her daughter (Mary Ann Irish) and a granddaughter (Ella Corner Blanchard, daughter of Mary
Ann Irish).
