AGED 61 y'rs. 1 mo'. & 24 D's. Blessed are the dead That die in the Lord. Additional Comments: All of the information regarding Isral Chapman appears on the Chapman family obelisk. His tombstone reads only "Isral." Notes: Isral Chapman's headstone contains only his first name. More detailed information is on the Chapman family obelisk. On the obelisk and headstone, the spelling of "Isral" is used. On the headstones of his children (Lewis N., Lydia A., and Sarah S.) the spelling is "Israel." Isral, 26, married Martha Jane Kent, 19, on 02/10/1842 at the house of her father in Alaiedon. Martin DuBois was a witness to the marriage. Isral's wife, Martha Jane Chapman is not buried in DuBois Cemetery. She had moved west before his death (see below). Isral Chapman was born in June 1814 in Andes, New York, and afterwards moved to Pennsylvania. The Federal Census of 1850 lists Isral as age 34, a farmer, owning 1200 acres in Alaiedon Township. According to Isral’s obituary, “he became converted to religion when twenty years of age, and lived a constant Christian life to the date of his death, at which time he was one of the oldest members of M.E. Church in this city, having connected himself therewith upon his first arrival here.” His wife, Martha Jane (Kent) Chapman is listed in the census as being 27 in 1850 and also born in New York. The children of Isral and Martha Chapman are listed in the 1850 census as Oliver C., age 7, born in Michigan, and Sarah S., age 1, born in Michigan. Three children of Isral and Martha Chapman are buried in DuBois Cemetery: Lewis N., Lydia A., and Sarah S. Chapman. The obituary in the Ingham County Democrat 07/31/1876, states that Isral died Sunday, at 6:30pm at the home of William Steward of Mason. At the time of Isral’s death, he had recently sold his farm and was preparing to travel west to join his family in Kansas. His family had gone ahead without Isral and he was to follow them, but instead, he became sick and died at the home of his friend, William Steward. Isral Chapman was the younger brother of Lucy Chapman, born 01/18/1807 in Delaware County, New York. Lucy married Garrett DuBois in January of 1832 in Delaware County, New York. She and her husband were the parents of Roswell DuBois, who is buried in DuBois Cemetery. Lucy and Garrett are buried in Felt Plains Cemetery in Dansville, Michigan.
