Miranda was born Feb. 17, 1820 in New York and she was the daughter of Louis Kent and Rhoda (Hopkins) Kent. Azubia’s brother was Seth H. Kent, who is also buried in DuBois Cemetery. Miranda Douglass’ death certificate shows her date of death as 9/15/1902, aged 82 years, 6 months, 28 days, of heart disease. Miranda died at the home of her son, Reaves Douglass, who lived at 900 North Dietz Road in Webberville, Michigan. Miranda was a widow at the time of her death. Her husband, John David Douglass, III, died a few years before Miranda and they share a tombstone in DuBois Cemetery (see next entry). The Federal Census of 1850 lists John Douglass, age 36, as a farmer owning 500 acres. His wife, Miranda, is listed as age 30, and they have three children in the home: Rhoda Jane, age 9, who later married Levi Parks and lived in Wheatfield Township; Emerson, age 4, who later married Jennie Blake and moved to South Bend, Indiana; and Mary M., age 1, who later married DeWitt Raymond and moved to Lansing. All three of these children were listed in the Census as having been born in New York. Two other known children born after the 1850 Census were Reaves and Alice A. (Douglass) Phillips. Reaves Douglass was born June 9, 1853 in Alaiedon Township, Douglass Corners, died February 9, 1929 in Leroy Township, and was buried in Spaulding Cemetery, Wheatfield Township. Family members state that Reaves is buried next to his wife, Sarah (Hills) Douglass in Spaulding Cemetery, but that he has no tombstone and his name was not carved on his wife’s stone. The son of Reaves and Sarah, Levi Douglass, is buried in DuBois Cemetery. Regarding Azubia Miranda, the Ingham County Democrat, 09/25/1902, pg. 10, col.3, states, “The funeral services, conducted by Reverend Keith, were held at the home and internment took place in the DuBois Cemetery on Wednesday.” DOUGLASS, John David John David Douglass, III (born in White Neck, New York on March 29, 1814, died February 8, 1899, 84y11m8d) was the son of John David Douglass, II and Alisa (Beeman) Douglass. John came to Alaiedon Township in 1840. He was married o Azubia Miranda (Kent) Douglass (see previous entry) and they resided in Leroy Township. The Ingham County Democrat states that he died Saturday, of appendicitis, in the home of his son, Reaves Douglass. Family members state that Reaves’ home was at 900 North Dietz Road in Webberville, Michigan. John was buried Tuesday, 2/11/99, in Dubois Cemetery. Family embers state that Reaves is buried next to his wife, Sarah (Hills) Douglass, but he has no tombstone and his name was not carved on his wife’s stone. The son of Reaves and Sarah, Levi Douglass, is buried in DuBois Cemetery. Alice A. (Douglass) Phillips (1857 – 1915) was married to Chauncey L. Phillips (1854 – 1929). Alice and Chauncey were the parents of Maza Phillips, buried in DuBois Cemetery. Alice and Chauncey are buried in Alchin Cemetery in Leroy Township, Ingham County, Michigan. The Douglass School (one-room school house) was named after the Douglass family. The first building was wooden (still in existence as an out building on a farm adjacent to the location of the second school house). The second school was built out of cinder block and, because of its roof line, was nicknamed “The Alamo” by students who attended there. The building stands today on Meridian Road at Frost Road in Alaiedon Township.
