DOYLE Died Mar. 6, 1900 Aged 77 Yrs. 8 Mos. & 1 day AT REST MOTHER DOYLE Notes: Sally Maria Phelps was born 07/05/1822 in Sodus, Wayne County, New York. She was the daughter of Joseph Phelps and Sarah (Sally) Young. She married (James) Francis Doyle in January, 1842. Francis died 01/24/1862 of measles complicated by a severe cold. They had 11 children, 4 of whom died in infancy. Sally moved to Alaiedon in March 1866 to be near her brother, George W. Phelps, who had moved to Wheatfield Township from New York in 1850 (George is also buried in DuBois Cemetery). Sally died at home 03/06/1900 of pneumonia and her funeral service was held at DuBois School Saturday, 03/10/1900, conducted by the Reverend A. S. Zimmerman; her remains were buried in DuBois Cemetery. Sally’s 7 children (who did not die in infancy) included: 1. James R. Doyle: died in Louisiana 08/03/1863, age 19, in Civil War, Co D, 160th NY Volunteers; 2. Rose Anna (Doyle) Wortman: born 5/14/1846 in Sodus, Wayne County, New York; died at age 43 years on 07/28/1889, leaving a husband, Milton Wortman, and three daughters, aged nine, seven and two -- named Edith (later Mrs. Wirt Warner of Wheatfield), Dora, and Bessie. Sally took in Rose’s 3 daughters. Regarding Rose Anna Wortman’s daughter Dora: On 3/21/1907 Thursday, 9:30pm, Charles C. Hale died in Wheatfield, aged 66 years. He was born on April 8, 1841 in Onondaga County NY. In 1864, he moved to Alaiedon Township and married Miss Betsy Kent in 1865. They had two children, both of whom died. In his will, he leaves the farm, worth $20,000, not to his wife but to a neighbor’s daughter, Miss Dora Wortman (daughter of Rose Anna [Doyle] Wortman and in the care of her grandmother, Sally M. Doyle, after the death of Rose Anna). Dora Wortman’s relationship with the Hale family was described as “…who had been living with them for several years and taking a daughter’s place” (ICD 08Jul1908, 1-5; 03Apr1907). Charles’ will gave his wife, Betsy, six months to find another place to live. She went to court and won a wife’s share consisting of 1/3 of the value of the farm. Rose Anna’s husband, Milton Wortman, died in 1911 at the age of 70 in the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital from gangrene of the foot. Milton is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, Michigan. From ICD, issue August 1, 1889 page 1, column 5, Rose Anna (Doyle) Wortman, age 43, died Sunday at her home in Williamston Township of heart disease. (Family members indicate that Rose Anna died of a heart attack while giving birth to a son who also died. Family members also state that Rose Anna and her son are buried in one grave, next to Sally Maria Doyle. No tombstone has been found though there is a grave next to Sally marked with a fieldstone headstone and footstone.) Rose Anna’s funeral service was held at Dubois School House Tuesday, 07/30/1889, and was attended by a large concourse of friends. She was buried in Dubois Cemetery. 3. John S. Doyle of Gratiot County, Michigan. He was the Administrator of the estate of Sally M. Doyle, and sold the forty acres in Alaiedon Township to W. N. Curtis for $1750.00. 4. Louis F. Doyle of Wheatfield Township, Ingham County, Michigan; 5. Freeman D. Doyle of Newaygo, Michigan; 6. Ward C. Doyle of Alaiedon Township, Michigan; 7. Francis M. (Doyle) Carpenter of Alpena, Michigan.
