He died on October 25, 1895 in Bunkerhill Township, Ingham, Michigan USA and buried at Fairview Cemetery, Section 3 Lot 426 in Dansville, Ingham, Michigan USA. He first married Eunice Livermore on August 21, 1842 in Unadilla Township, Livingston, Michigan USA by Rev. R. B. Dixon at the house of her father, James Livermore in Unadilla Township, Livingston, Michigan USA with witnesses John J. Livermore and Jane Livermore. They had seven children: Franklin (Laura M. Hicks), Samuel, Seneca, Eliza Jane (Charles Vernon Havens), James Livermore Ewers (Belle Cozad), Joseph Emmett and William Ewers. After Eunice died on March 2, 1862 he remarried to Adelia L. Harford on January 12, 1863 in Iosco Township, Livingston, Michigan USA. The witnesses to their marriage were Adelia's brother Theodore D. W. Harford and wife Eliza. Joseph and Adelia had four children: Annetta "Nettie" (David E. Carl), Edwin Freeman (Ella E. Shaw), Eva "Ida" (Charles E. Shaw) and Ervin Roscoe Ewers (Agnes Celia Heeney).
