Garrett DuBois is listed on the west side of a DuBois family monument and his 
wife, Lucy is listed on the north side of the monument.  Garrett DuBois' life 
is discussed in "Pioneer History of Ingham County: District No. 3, Alaiedon, 
The DuBois Distrit" (pg. 263) and mentions that Garrett moved to Michigan in 
1838 from Ulster County, New York, after hearing glowing accounts from his 
brothers, already living in Michigan.  Garrett settled on section 35 and 
cleared about ninety acres of land.  The barn he built in 1842 is thought to 
be the first frame barn built in the town.  He built his home in 1845 and then 
sold his farm to John Every, of Jackson.  John Every and his wife, Jane, moved 
into the home on March 31, 1859.  John Every died in 1887 and Jane Every died 
in 1896.  Their two maiden daughters, Addie and Ella May Every, eventually 
owned the farm.  Gail and Evelyn Every built a new home on the property and 
moved in on October 15, 1959.  Garrett DuBois' original home had fallen into 
disrepair due to "bootleggers" according to Gail Every.  Garrett DuBois' 
family were descendants of Geoffrie DuBois, a knight banneret and companion to 
Duke William in the conquest of England in the year 1066.  District #3, 
Alaiedon Township, was called the "DuBois District" and was better known by 
that name than its number.  The first school meeting was held in DuBois 
District on November 11, 1841 and Garrett was named as the director.  A 
decision was made to build a log school house in the SW corner of the SW 
quarter of section 25.  The first teacher in DuBois School was Samuel DuBois, 
son of Mr. & Mrs. Stephen DuBois.  Three months of school was taught the first 
year.  In 1856, a frame school house was built and its first teacher was Kate 
DuBois.  Then, in 1891, a brick school house was built.  According to the 
obituary of Garrett DuBois, Garrett was a lumberman in New York before he 
moved to Michigan with his wife, Lucy (Chapman) DuBois.  Garrett and Lucy 
DuBois were married in 1832 and came to Michigan in wagons.  They settled in 
the DuBois District (Alaiedon) and later moved to Bunkerhill.  Garrett helped 
build the Methodist Episcopal Church at Bunkerhill and was a member of that 
denomination for over 60 years.  One of Garrett and Lucy's children, an infant 
son named Roswell, died in 1841 and was the second burial in DuBois Cemetery.
A daughter of Garrett and Lucy, named Ann DuBois, died October 7, 1861, 18 
yrs., 6 days, and is buried near her parents in Felt Plains Cemetery.
