Dean was born May 28, 1924 in Mason, the son of Ray and Beulah (Dean) Bullen. Following graduation from Mason High School, he worked for the Department of Agriculture and enrolled in Michigan Tech. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1942 and was called to active duty on April 1, 1943 with the Corps of Engineers, serving in England and France. Following 3 years of Army Service, Dean returned to Michigan Tech and graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering, with honor. He was employed with the Michigan State Highway Department in bridge design for 38 1/2 years. Dean became Special Assignment Engineer in Design, actively engaged in repair and rehabilitaiton of fixed and movable bridges. He had been a Professional Engineer since 1953 and upon retirement in 1987, the department honored him with a freeway rest area on I-96 west of Lansing that was named for him. Dean was Treasurer of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episocpal Church for 36 years and was interested in the Mason Historical Society and genealogical research. He compiled a book on the Bullen family. On May 23, 1987, he married Mary G. (Zimmerman) Clark. Their parents were friends and they had known each other since childhood. Surviving are his wife, Mary; several cousins; and dear fried, Ardella (Mrs. Max) Bement and her family who are considered family to Mary and Dean. It was Dean's request that no services be held. At his request, cremation has taken place and interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in the spring. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Ball-Dunn Chapel, Mason.
