VANSLYKE CO D 8 NY H ART NOTE: Civil War records shows he enlisted at the age of 21 as a Private in Lockport, NY in Company D, New York 8th Heavy Artillery Regiment on 14 Aug 1862. Mustered out on 05 June 1865 at Munson's Hill, VA. He was the husband of Caroline B. VanSlyke, father of John, Hattie and Anna VanSlyke and grandfather of Orlando Van Root. Hugh and Ida J. (VanSlyke) Root were the parents of Orlando Van Root.
