He married Jessie Tripp on January 1, 1918 in Big Rapids, Mecosta Co., MI. She was the daughter of Ivan N.and Laura (Long) Tripp being born on November 24, 1892 in Hinton Twp., Mecosta Co., MI. Shortly after their marriage, Leroy served in World War I in the US. Army from April 29, 1918 until April 27, 1919 being discharged from Camp Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan. His war battle was the Battle of the Argonne September 29 to October 4, 1918. His rank was listed as Private 1st Class, Co. "I" 337th infantry. After military service, he and Jessie live in Lakeview, Montcalm County, MI for a while where the first three of their children were born. The next two children were born in Altona, Mecosta Co., MI. They moved to Meridian Township where the next five children were born and their final moving place was to Willoughby and Aurelius Road, Holt, Ingham Co., MI where their last child was born. In total they had 11 children, losing one child, an infant boy, stillborn on Oct 29, 1921. Leroy was a farmer as well as a retiree from Reo Motors in Lansing. He also was a member of the Morley S. Oates Post of Lansing, Veteran of Foreing Wars., World War I Barracks No. 235. Leroy and Jessie Griffin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Holt Methodist Church at the corner of Cedar and Aurelius Road December 31, 1968 with their family and friends. Leroy and Jessie lived at an old farmhouse on the corner of Willougby and Aurelius Road which they eventually sold some of the land where apartment buildings now stand. They saved a little bit of land and built a new home which unfortunately Leroy never lived in much as he became ill in June of 1968 and after a three month stay in the hospital from June 11-Sept 9 he passed away on September 9, 1968 in the veterans hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Funeral servies were held on September 12, 1968 at the Estes Leadley Funeral Home in Holt and burial in Maple Ridge Cemetery. Jessie lived quite a few more years at their residence at 4543 Willoughby Road Holt until her death on April 18, 1990 at her place of residence. Two children helped take care of her for the remaining years, Elma Arnold and Jack Griffin. Three of their children are now deceased, Robert Griffin, Jack Griffin and Harold Griffin. Jack and Harold are also buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery. Robert is buried at the Veteran Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI.
