Detroit July 21 - The death list as a result of yesterday's collision near Salem in the wreck of an excursion and fright train, stands tonight at thirty - one, but among the 100 injured in this city and Ionia, eight are reported to be in a serious condition and not out of danger. There are sixty - one injured people at their homes in Ionia and forty-two were brought to the hospital in this city for treatment. Of the long list of suffering persons at Ionia, but one, Mrs. M. Darling, whose husband and son were killed, is reported tonight, 16 be in dangerous condition. Seven of the injured in the local hospitals are not yet out of danger. This has been a day of grief and mourning in the little city of Ionia which is located 130 miles west of Detroit. Mayor John F Bible estimates that one in every fifty of this city of inhabitants were either killed or injured yesterday in the wreck. All last night members of the citizens committee which was appointed when the extent of the catastrophe was realized, were at work visiting the homes of the dead and injured and arranging for medical attention and assistance where it was necessary. All of the cities normal activities have practically been suspended and everyone is devoting attention to the wreck victims. One of the most pathetic cases of suffering is the Hess family, which lost its father and two sons, They were breadwinners and a widow and (illegible) children are left nearly destitute by the death of Charles, Herman and Paul Hess. Not until today was the identity of all the dead positively established and an accurate list made up. All but five of the victims whose names are among the death toll lived in Ionia.
