Grand Rapids Herald August 9, 1898
Ionia, Mich. Aug. 8-School Commissioner Hale reports that out of 28 school
districts so far heard from in Ionia county, only one voted for free text books,
but all the rest to remain as they are, or under the present system. It is
evident that Ionia county is against the uniform text book law as passed by the
legislature of 1897, although there are 120 districts to hold their meeting in
September.
