Grand Rapids Press June 8, 1909
Portland, Mich,, July 8- Jethro Smith, a laborer, was sentenced by Judge Selleck
to ninety days in the Detroit house of correction for beating Vetile Roberts a
man ninety-eight years old.  Roberts owned the house in which Smith lived and
went to collect the rent. Smith said he gad no money and sprang upon the old man
cutting him up badly. Smith disappeared soon after the incident, but was finally
located by the officers. He is about forty years old.
