Manager is Jubilant. Puts Goods on Market That Are Sold By Merit Combined With Pushing Salesmen - Factory Very Complete. PORTLAND, Jan. 9, 1912.- If present indications are to be taken as a criterion, the business of the Portland Manufacturing company will show an increase of about 300% during the year 1912. At least this is the opinion of George W. Wood, manager of the plant, who has built up the institution from a comparatively small factory to one of the most completely equipped washing machine and brass motor manufactories in the country. BIG ORDER RECEIVED Last week the company received an order for a carload of tub washers for January delivery, an order of this volume never before having been received by the company at this season of the year, and Manager Wood is jubilant over the prospects for a largely increased business during 1912. Last year the company considered itself fortunate in disposing of 300 machines during the month of January, but this year it can see possible the shipment of not less than 1,500. Manager Wood is going after the sale of water motors and power washers this year with even more vigor than he has shown in the past, and the campaign for sales which has been outlined by him promises to bring some amazing results. Charles Eckert, for years in the employ of the Yost Gearless Water Motor Company of Springfield Ohio has been retained by Mr. Wood, and will call upon the trade in the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. Mr. Eckert is one of the most thoroughly experienced men in the business, and his addition to the company's force of traveling representatives promised to be a profitable one. A.J. Dilley of Muir is representing the company in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota, and J.B. Roe of Portland is to enter the employ of the company about Feb. 1. He will not doubt be assigned the southern territory which he has covered for many years in the interests of large publishing companies. CONTROLS VALUABLE SPECIALTIES The local company now has the entire manufacture of the Terriff hand power washer, the power washer and the brass motors under its control, and during the past year the receipts of the plan have paid the cost of new machinery in the brass motor room, as well as the expense of building the brass foundry, and it is expected that the year 1912 will show substantial dividend for the stockholders. The new "Giant" motor, which was recently perfected in the local plant is meeting with excellent endorsement by the trade, and orders are already coming fast. W.W. Lung has been retained as sales manager for the new motor, and prospects are unusually bright for turned out many thousands of them this year. The company expects to manufacture and ship 25, 000 tub washer during 1912, as well as increase the motor business to about three times its former size, having for some months past been supplying the motors to other manufacturers of washing machines throughout the south and west.
