Inter Ocean September 26, 1874
Ionia, Mich. Sept 23, 1874.
Ionia county is in her glory. Her eighteenth annual fair is in progress, and her
best herds of short horns and Galloways; her finest flocks of Merinoes,
Southdowns, and Leicestters, her best breeds of Chester Whites, Berkshire and
Maggie swine, and her thoroughbred horses of the most noted blood are here, and
make a good show in their line. The short horn cattle and merino sheep are
numerous and especially attractive. The poultry hall is full and one rarely sees
at a county fair so many fine examples of fouls. Floral hall is literally packed
with flowers, fruit, pantry stores, needlework, and other displays of industry
and pre-eminent will. There is a small but splendid show of carriages and a tip
top exhibition of agricultural implements.
The fair grounds are right on the banks of the Grand River, a happy selection
for such a purpose, and the Driving Park Association, the Hon. Hampton Rich,
President has recently added a beautiful grove of fifteen acres which has
improved the grounds. 
A grand stand capable of seating a thousand people (illegible). Underneath is a
dining room run by M.H. Huntress, the popular landlord of the Bailey house.        
The President of the Ionia Agricultural Society is George W. Webber who also
runs the Second National Bank of this city. He can count bank-notes and pumpkins
and carry one to every ten in both cases.

The Ionia Fair began in 1856 and has continued to this day. Congratulations Ionia!
