Lansing State Journal June 30, 1941
  Portland,  June 28 - The last remnant of a former type of sidewalk 
construction in Portland was removed last week and the old "tar" sidewalks 
of the village became history when a short strip of tar walk was taken up 
from in front of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Tschopp on Grant 
street.
Believed to be one of the first pieces of tar sidewalk laid in the village-
and now the last-this walk reflected the gradual change that has been seen 
in sidewalk construction.  In the early history of the village, board walks 
were used.  These gave way to tar walks, the first had surfaced construction 
of which the village boasted.   Then came the present era of the cement 
sidewalks
