James O. Smith, who lives five miles southeast of Portland, Mich., has a little history stores away in his mind which is especially interesting to residents of the Fifth ward and member of the Creston Citizens' association. Mr. Smith drops into town occasionally and every times he comes he is reminded of the time when as a boy he located here with his parents in 1851, They settled on a farm on what is now Plainfield avenue, but the exact location Mr. Smith is unable to give. At any rate the land was purchased at $20 an acre and on it were two log homes. One of them was a double house and prior to that had been used as a hotel. Smith says that he has learned that the land which at was time was his father's now is a part of the city and the lots platted. Smith is an old soldier. He enlisted in 1862 as a private in Company E. Twenty-fifth Michigan infantry. Additional Comments: Transcribers Note; Mr. Smith, a resident of Portland, Michigan is referring to Plainfied avenue in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
