(Special to the Evening Press.) Ionia, Mich., Jan 31. - The trial of Dr. Bell of Portland, charged with violating the local option law by dispensing whiskey, is on trial here. The freight agent at Portland then testified that he had delivered 245 gallons of liquor or about five barrels to Dr. Bell; while Mr. Kortlander of Grand Rapids on oath testified that he had delivered to him 200 gallons, or nearly five barrels; all this during a period from July to November 1911. Dr. Bell does not deny it, but claims to be operating under a letter from the attorney general, which opinion he got after all of the Portland druggist quit dispensing liquor. Much amusement was injected into the proceedings when many witnesses were put on the stand to testify as to the kind of liquor that got. Some got plain whiskey for medicinal purposes; others what they supposed was whiskey. Some got it for colds, others for lumbago, others for their wives.
