Portland, Oct. 3. - Wednesday, Portland's jubilee day, came up to all expectations and proved to be the most successful celebration held here in several years, with the exception of last year's homecoming. The town began to fill up with people at the arrival of the 8:03 train and the crowds continued coming until long after dinner. The first big feature of the day was the ball game, pulled off in the forenoon between the fats and the leans. The leans had the advantage of their opponents and beat them by a score of 10 to 1. Much amusement was furnished by featured on both sides. Batteries - Fats, H. Mescher and L. Adams; leans, Steadman and R. Mescher. The industrial parade, headed by George Van Horn and daughter, Gladys, characterized as Uncle Same and wife, came off at noon and was out exception the best attraction of its kind ever witnessed here. Much credit must be given to the band, the business men, and the Hobo Kazoo band for the marked success of this feature. After noon the games took place up-on Kent st. and the winners as follows: Running race, Lester Campbell; pie eating contest, Chas. Inch; bologna race, Chas. Inch; fat man's race, Roy Snyder; tug of war, Portland. The baseball game between Portland and Pewamo was featureless and easily won by the local team by a score of 14 to 3. Prof. Amsdill and assistant made a fine balloon ascension and double parachute drop. Much excitement was caused as the balloon started up, Clyde Hazelton became entangled in the guy ropes and was carried up several feet before he could free himself. He was not injured, however, by the fall he received. The band dance held in the evening at Blanchard's hall was very well attended, about 200 couples being present.
