Slowins STILL ANOTHER NAME FOR THE CEMETERY ON SUNFIELD HIGHWAY IN ORANGE TOWNSHIP: The other night, Gordon Walkington, who is the outgoing Clerk of Orange Township, called to my attention that among their township records is a notation telling about the cemetery in section 34 of Orange (sometimes called FIRST or MATTHEWS cemetery) that the cemetery originally belonged to people in both Orange and Sebewa townships. I went to the Register of Deeds office and looked up that location to find it was deeded March 22, 1877 to the trustees of the Union Cemetery Company of Sebewa and Orange, Ionia County, Michigan. There is nothing further recorded to indicate sale or assumption by either township and the deed has no record of the name of the original trustees. Roberta Helms of Orange Township is the new township clerk and now had that entry into the Orange Township records. Apparently at some time after 1877 the Union Cemetery Company became defunct and the Township of Orange assumed ownership and care of the cemetery. - Grayden Slowins.
