When he was about four years old his parents removed to Cayuga county where they remained, excepting a short time spent in Niagara county until shortly after the death of the father. In 1855 the family came to Michigan and settled near the center of North Plains township, Ionia county. On April 12th, 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss Cynthia M. Sessions. Sometime after this Mr. and Mrs. Abbott located in the village of Matherton where, for a number of years, in association with his brother, J.R. Abbott, he worked at boot and shoe making. Later they settled on the farm in Lebanon township, Clinton county, which was their home for many years. Two years ago they came to this village where they have since made their home with their son, C.F. Abbott. Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. Abbott went to spend a few days with their niece, Mrs. Clyde Straight, where at about 6:30 that evening he was taken severely ill, after hours of intense suffering he passed away a little after six o’clock in the morning of Dec. 1st, 1913 surrounded by loved ones. Mr. and Mrs. Abbott were the parents of two children, Claude F., with whom they have made their home for a number of years, and Nellie C. who died some years ago in the beauty of young womanhood and besides whose precious clay the mortal remains of the father she loved so well now rests. Mr. Abbott was a man, who was very retiring in disposition, but ever ready and willing to do his part in the promotion of worthy enterprise. Honest and upright in all dealings with his fellow man, his dearest friends were those who knew him best. A kind husband and father, his home was to him the dearest place on earth and in that home he will be sadly missed. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years and until disease made it impossible, was very active in all departments of church work. For a good many years he has been an intense sufferer from rheumatism. Although he suffered so intensely he never betrayed by word or action beyond what was actually necessary. In his younger and more active years he was often honored and trusted with public office, having held at various times, several of the most important offices in his township. He died in the fullness of Christian faith and a firm believer in the love and justice of a just God and a loving Heavenly Father. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at the home of C.F. Abbott, Rev. H.V. Wade officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the East Plains cemetery.
