CRASH IS FATAL TO WOODBURY MAN SATURDAY NIGHT
Harry A. Ackley, 39, of Lake Odessa, Route 3, a garage operator at Woodbury, 
was fatally injured at 5:40 p.m. Saturday in a two-car collision at the 
intersection of M-66 and the Clarksville Rd.

The other car, driven by Gordon Piercefield, a farmer residing on Route 1, 
Portland, was traveling south on M-66 and had slowed to make a left turn. 

Ackley, also traveling south behind the other car, attempted to pass on the 
left side. His right fender caught the left front fender of Piercefield's car, 
causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

The impact threw him out and the car turned-over four or five times before 
coming to a stop on its side on the edge of the pavement. 

Ackley was taken to the Ionia County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced 
dead on arrival.

Sheriff Ben Neve, Deputy John Thalison, with Deputy Clarence Aldrich of Lake 
Odessa, investigated.

Piercefield was released after being questioned. He is suffering from shock and 
is now confined to his bed under the doctor's care.

Riding with Ackley was Henry (Ford) Landis of Woodland, who escaped serious 
injury. 

Wallace Jackson, Ionia Coroner, said death was caused by a possible scull 
fracture and broken neck.

Ackley was taken to the Pickens Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa, where funeral 
services were held Wednesday with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.

He was born January 10, 1914, on a farm near Vermontville, the son of Elba V. 
and Veva (Henion) Ackley. He attended Woodland school and had owned and 
operated a garage at Woodbury for the past five years. He lived part of the 
time at his garage and also at his parents' home. He was unmarried.

Surviving, besides the parents, are three brothers, Dayton, of Woodland, 
Kenneth, of Nashville, and Vern, at home.
