She was born September 22, 1918 in the town of Sands in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to James Ebenezer and Clara Belle (Hayes) Smart. Nola grew up in the Marquette area and attended Graveraet High School in Marquette. She was one of the first Candy Stripers in the area hospital under President Roosevelt’s work program. Nola worked many years sewing interiors for automobiles at the Ionia Manufacturing Company. Then, in her spare time while she was working full- time, Nola and nine other factory workers formed the Ionia Credit Union – each putting up $1.00 for a starting pot of $10.00. Nola served as its Treasurer and the Credit Union still exists today. Nola was known as the local Mitten Lady, knitting thousands of pairs of mittens, and sewing and doing many crafts through the years. She was a foster grandmother for more than 15 years in the Belding School System for the elementary grades. Nola was preceded in death by her husbands: Anthony Norbert Hugenroth and Frank H. Adams; son, Norbert Joseph Hugenroth (who passed six days after Nola’s death); five stepsons: The Adams Boys – Patrick, Larry, Terry, Steve, Doug “Mick”; grandson, Todd William Ashbaugh; great grandson, Rocco Hines; daughter-in-law, Betty Louise; her brothers and sisters: Fred, Bob, Clara, Violet, Eleanor and Shirley. Surviving are her children: Jim and Bonnie Mae (Hugenroth) Ashbaugh of Edmore, MI, Patrick James and Wendy Hugenroth of Belding, MI; five step sons: The Adams Boys - Jim, Richard, Phil, Bud, and Bill Adams; many grandchildren and many great great- grandchildren; and her two sisters: May and Goldie. A Memorial Service for Nola will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Noon at Brigham Funeral Chapel, Edmore with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to Noon at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider your local Hospice or Nola’s Family.
