Valaire York Addison, 89, of Kalamazoo and formerly of Sturgis and Lake Odessa 
died Dec. 28, 1996 at the Upjohn Community Care Center.

She was born Jan. 21, 1917 in Lake Odessa, the daughter of Ernest G. and Pearl 
(Bever) York.  She married Robert A. Addison of Grand Rapids Sept. 2, 1939 and 
they lived in Ann Arbor, Midland and Grand Rapids before settling in Sturgis 
in 1955.  She was a graduate of Grand Rapids Junior College and encouraged and 
supported her husband in his broad interests and career changes which 
culminated as president of Kirsch Co.  She greatly enjoyed being a mother and 
was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.  She also volunteered for 
more than 20 years at Sturgis Memorial Hospital.  Her interests included 
horseback riding, tennis into her 70’s, needle point, flowers and entertaining 
family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Y. Addison and Laurie (James) 
DeHaven, both of Kalamazoo; and her grandchildren, Cynthia V. DeHaven of 
Lansing and Jeffrey J. DeHaven of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1955, her son Robert A. Addison, 
Jr. in 1977, her sister, Virginia Butler of Kalamazoo and her brother, Bruce 
York, of East Lansing.  Memorial services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal 
Church in Sturgis at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 with Father William Murphy and 
Father George Minnix officiating.  Interment of cremains will be at 
Resurrection Garden, the King in Kalamazoo at a later date.
