Adgate, 65, retired farmer and former member of the county board of supervisors, dropped dead on his farm in Orange township late Monday afternoon. His body was found lying face downward in the field a moment later by J. E. Alsip, tenant on the farm, who with his son, Richard, and Fred Grundy, a neighbor and the latter’s son, Lester, had been at work some distance away. He evidently had died instantly. Since his retirement from active farming about 16 years ago, Mr. Adgate with his family had resided in Ionia, having purchased the sandstone residence of the late Watt Snell, at 642 West Main street. Born June 29, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Adgate, pioneer settlers in Ionia township, Mr. Adgate had spent his lifetime in the county. He served one term as supervisor for Orange township. Surviving with the widow, Mrs. Nellie E. Adgate, are two daughters, Mrs. Harvey Phillips, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Mrs. Edith Aldrich, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Scheurer, of Orange township; Mrs. Frank Taft and Mrs. Arton Benedict, both residents of Ionia township; two brothers, Lewis and Frank Adgate, and one granddaughter, Miriam Phillips. Funeral services will be held from the home at 2 o’clock this afternoon and will be followed by further services in the LeValley church at 2:30. Burial will be in Balcom cemetery.
