Although he had been failing in health for more than a year, he was seriously ill only about three weeks before his death. Mr. Adgate was born in Berlin township 83 years ago, the son of William and Sarah (Tuttle) Adgate. He lived at the home farm until his marriage to Elizabeth Fleming in October, 1883. At that time they moved to a farm in Orange township where they lived until going to Portland about 25 years ago. Mr. Adgate is survived by the widow and two sons, Maurice, of Washington, D.C. and Elmer of Lyons; three sisters, Mrs. Phoebe Scheurer, Lyons; Mrs. Mary Taft, Ionia township, and Mrs. Arton Benedict, Hall street, Ionia; one brother, Lewis Adgate of Ionia township, and several grandchildren. A brother, John Adgate, of Ionia, and a sister, Mrs. W. Hall, of Eugene, Oregon, are deceased. Largely attended funeral services were held from the Congregational church in Portland Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock. Bearers were Chauncey Jordan, Nicholas Lawless, Allen Hughes, Verl Tyler, George Smith and William Toan, all members of Portland Grange. Burial was in Balcom cemetery.
