She had been in poor health for some time and was stricken with pneumonia a few weeks ago. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Harwood and was born in Berlin township April 20, 1854. She attended the Eddy school near her home. April 7, 1876 she was married to Chester A. Adgate of Berlin township and they made their home on a farm in that township. A few years later they came to Ionia, where Mr. Adgate was engaged in the cattle buying business and conducted a meat market in Ionia. He later sold the market and purchased the old Sessions farm where they lived until 1906 when he sold the farm to the county. The Sessions farm is now known as the county farm. They came to Saranac in 1907 and she has lived there since. Mr. Adgate preceded her in death two years ago. She was a member of the Saranac Congregational church, the Mite society, the Saranac Ladies’ Literary society, the WCTU and the American Legion auxiliary. Survivors are six children, John who operates a meat market in Saranac; Glenn, Saranac postmaster; Earl, who is employed in the state capital at Lansing; Mrs. Vinnie Gates, who has been living with her mother; Mrs. Ray Smith of Berlin township, and Mrs. Lydia Walter of Keene township. Sixteen grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held from the Saranac Congregational church Thursday afternoon, April 7, at 2 o’clock with the Rev. John Gehring, pastor, officiating. Prayer services will be conducted from the home at 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon. Interment will be held in the Saranac cemetery.
