Mamie Agostini Is Dead

Mrs. Mamie Agostini, 84, an Ionia business woman for nearly 60 years, died at
Ionia County memorial hospital Tuesday at 6:17 a.m. after several years of
illness.  Mrs. Agostini, who with her late husband Mike, had operated Agostini’s
confectionary store on the south side of Main street, was taken to the hospital
Monday from the rest home where she had been confined for some time.

Born in Chicago, she was one of 12 children of Italian immigrants.  When she was
six she moved to Grand Rapids with her parents.  She was married in Grand Rapids
October 6, 1896 and with her husband, Michael and infant son Louis, came to
Ionia January 20, 1900.  

In Ionia the family set up an ice cream, candy and fruit store in the building
where the present Penney store is located.  Eight years later the Agostinis
bought the Bay Comstock site across the street and there they constructed their
own store which has been operated by Louis Agostini’s widow, Fern.  Michael
Agostini died in 1934 and their son Louis in 1948.

Mrs. Agostini is survived by daughter-in-law, Mrs. Fern Agostini of Ionia; five
grandchildren, Mrs. Sally Griffin of Battle Creek, Mrs. Sue Swinehart, Michael,
Louis and Phillip of Ionia; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Clark
of Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews of Grand Rapids.

Rosary will be recited at Myers funeral home Thursday at 7:30 p.m.  Funeral Mass
will be at SS. Peter and Paul church Friday at 9 a.m. with burial at Mt. Olivet
cemetery.
