Aikens, 87, of Stanton and formerly of Ionia, passed away Monday, May 12, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Aikens was born Feb. 28, 1916 in Lansing, the daughter of Anona Beebe and Orpha (Reasoner) Beebe. She has been a resident of Stanton since 1973. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, stationed in West Palm Beach, Florida. Vivian volunteered with the Red Cross as a Gray Lady for many years. In addition, she was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Stanton American Legion Post 452, the Ionia Moose Lodge, the Honor Society of Women Legionnaires and the National Association of American Legion Historians. Also, over the years, she held many department and district offices including Post Commander of the Ionia and Stanton American Legion Posts. Mrs. Aikens is survived by one son, Donald J. Aikens of Stanton, two grandchildren, Donald Jason Aikens of Hudsonville, and Jill Marie Aikens of Ionia; one sister, Doris Welsh of DeWitt; and one brother Anona E. Beebe Jr. of Santa Barbara, California. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the Stebbins and Simpson Funeral Home at Sheridan, with the Chaplain Gene Hills of the Stanton American Legion Post 452 along with full military rites conducted by the Legion Post. Visitation is today from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Sheridan. Interment at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Lansing. Memorial considerations may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
