He had been ill for a long time, his trouble being a complication of diseases that baffled the skill of the attending physicians. The day before his death he brightened up considerably and his family entertained high hopes of his ultimate recovery. But he suddenly fell into a relapse, became unconscious, and in that condition passed away “to that bourne from which no traveler e’er returns.” “Abe,” as everybody familiarly called him, was a prominent figure in local politics in years agone. He was withal a warm friend, a cordial hater, and an inveterate republican. He held many official positions, including that of sheriff, deputy United States marshal, etc. His stalwart form will be much missed in this city—the scene of so many of his political triumphs and occasional defeats. His funeral took place at his late residence, and many old acquaintances from this city were present. Revs. J. Donnelly and Dr. Kemp were the officiating clergymen. The following facts in regard to Mr. Alderman’s biography is furnished us by a friend of the deceased: He was born in Ancaster, Canada, April 24th, 1828, and was therefore at the time of his death in the 54th years of his age. His father, Bucklin Alderman, was born in Connecticut, and his mother, Mary (Stirling) Alderman, in Steuben county, New York. The family consisting of the parents and seven children, of whom Abraham was one, removed to Detroit January 5, 1834, and the father died there in 1838. Mrs. Alderman removed to Highland, Oakland county, the same year. The subject of this sketch was married January 1, 1849, to Miss Lydia M. Maynard of Farmington, who survives him. In 1854 he removed to North Plains, Ionia county, and lived there a few years, when he purchased the farm where he died. He was one of a family of eight children, only two of whom are living, viz: William Alderman of North Plains, and Mrs. William Bush of Sebewa. His mother is living in her 80th year. Two children survive him: a son, Frank, and daughter, Mrs. Darius Welch.
