Allen is dead and with his passing Portland loses one of its most representative and highly respected pioneer business men and residents. The death of Mr. Allen occurred most unexpectedly Sunday as he was preparing to attend the funeral of his lifelong friend, Mrs. Elsie Kelly. As the time of Mrs. Kelly’s funeral approached he went to the garage for his automobile but shortly returned to the house. Seeing that all was not well with him Mrs. Allen called a doctor. Thinking that his condition would soon improve the doctor left the house but Mr. Allen continued to grow worse and in a short time passed away. He was born in Sebewa township 72 years ago. His early life he spent on the farm. He began clerking at Sebewa corners and later worked with different mercantile firms in Portland, being in business at different times. Of recent years he was engaged in real estate transactions. He had served as township treasurer and at the time of his death was the vice-president of the Maynard- Allen bank. He was a member of the Knights Templar and the Mystic Shrine, under whose auspices funeral services were held at the late home, in charge of Rev. John H. Stewart, Wednesday afternoon. The pallbearers were Dr. W. H. McBride, Dan M. Watson, F. A. Wheeler, Carl O. Derby, Cloyce VanHouten and Roy W. Dawdy. As a mark of respect and the high esteem in which he was held all business in the village came to a halt during the hours of the funeral, business places and offices being closed from 2 to 4 o’clock. Surviving are the widow; a brother, Merritt Allen, of Lake City, and a sister, Mrs. Charles T. Thenan, of Sacramento, California.
