The child became seriously ill Tuesday evening at the Ionia County Memorial hospital, where he had his tonsils removed Tuesday morning. Dr. Charles Black, hospital pathologist, was to perform a post mortem at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. Dr. C. T. Pankhurst, attending physician, said he was unable to determine the cause of death until the report of the post mortem Wednesday afternoon. The boy was a pupil in the third grade at the Emerson grade school. He walked to the hospital Tuesday morning for the operation, and appeared to be in good health after the operation. He had been complaining of ear trouble for some time. Surviving are the mother, two sisters, Mrs. Carl Skinner of Ionia and Dorothy at home; a half brother, Pvt. Charles Allen, now a patient in an English hospital after being wounded in France and receiving the Purple heart; and a grandfather, A. O. Martin, Adams street. Subsequent Publication: Thursday, September 28, 1944 Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Boynton Funeral Home, Rich street, for John Albert Allen, 8-year-old son of Mrs. Ethel Allen, 216 North Dexter street. The child died en route to Ann Arbor where he was to be put into an iron lung. He underwent an operation for the removal of his tonsils Tuesday morning and died at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday between East Lansing and Williamston. Dr. Charles Black, pathologist of the Ionia County Memorial hospital, performed a post-mortem at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Boynton Funeral home. Dr. C. T. Pankhurst, attending physician, said the post-mortem revealed the child had died of post-operative hemorrhages. Rev. Dwight M. Kitch, pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate and interment will be at the Highland Park cemetery.
