Mr. Allen had been in failing health for some time and had been confined to his home for a number of weeks. Had Mr. Allen lived until October 26, 1927, he would have celebrated his eighty- second birthday anniversary. He was born October 26, 1845, and had been a lifelong resident of Ionia county. He was born in Ronald township and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin B. Allen. Mr. Allen was reared on the paternal farm, which he helped to clear, and supplemented his schooling in the subscription school in the neighborhood of his home by a year in the public school at Ypsilanti. Upon reaching manhood Mr. Allen purchased a quarter of a section of land in Ronald township. After his marriage to Miss Susan S. Morrison in 1873 Mr. Allen purchased 44 acres of land to add to his quarter section. Mr. and Mrs. Allen resided on the farm which was west of Palo until they retired in 1907 and came to Ionia to make their home. Mrs. Allen received her education in the Ionia schools and was a public school teacher at the time of her marriage to Mr. Allen. Some time after the death of Mrs. Allen he was united in marriage to Mrs. Ida Coe, widow of Henry Coe, and she survives her husband. Mr. Allen was a republican and held various township offices in Ronald before coming to Ionia to make his home. Besides being a director of the National bank for many years he also served as a director of the Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance company. He was also a member of the official board of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years, both he and Mrs. Allen being active members there. For 35 years Mr. Allen was affiliated with the Palo lodge, F.& A.M., but had been a member of Ionia Lodge No. 36 for a number of years. Besides being a member of F.& A.M. he was also an active member of Queen Esther chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and also of Ionic shrine No. 41, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Besides his widow he is survived by one brother, Herbert Allen, of Ronald township; two nephews, Elmer Cowan, of Ionia, and Ed Cowan of Grand Rapids; a niece, Mrs. John McKendry, of Easton township. Funeral announcements will be made later.
