Allen, 70, former Ionia Fire Chief, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996 at his home. He was born March 31, 1926 in Ionia, the son of Mable (Medamer) and William Allen, and spent his entire life in Ionia. He attended Ionia schools and married Dorothy Rieger July 8, 1950 in Ionia. Allen retired from the Ionia Fire Department in 1975 after 21 years. He served as the chief from 1971 to 1975 and had also been the fire marshall at the Chrysler Corp. Lyons Plant until its closing. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and earned several ribbons for service during the war and under fire while aboard the USS Concorde off Japan and Alaskan Islands. He was a member of the Sheridan V.F.W. Post #5065 and was affiliated with the Shiloh Community Church. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Allen; one son, Richard D. (Judy) Allen II; one grandchild, Traccie Lower; four great-grandchildren, Catherine Kaye Dawson, Andrew, Jakob, and Zakery Lower; two sisters, Lucille Allen of Ionia and Jean Medler of Florida; four brothers, William G. Allen of Florida, Lyle (Dorothy) Allen of Charlotte, Robert E. Allen of Texas, and Howard (Pat) Allen of Arkansas; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Ila Dunkelburg and Mildred Andersen. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5 at the Rich St. Chapel of Cook Funeral Home. Rev. Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church will be officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
