With the unfortunate man at the time of the accident were his son, Leo, his brother, Fred Allen, Leo Jenks and Ralph Dyer. The party were returning from Clarksville where it is said they had gone earlier in the day to secure employment. The cause of the accident was a Ford sedan, being driven north on M-24 by a Mr. Plock. The Ford rammed the Chandler amidships the heavier car overturning then righting up on its wheels. Joseph Allen was the only one of the occupants to be thrown clear of the car receiving internal injuries besides injury to the spinal cord from which he never recovered immediately following the accident an ambulance from Lake Odessa was summoned and the injured man brought to Ionia. Owing to the fact that the sheriff's force were not notified until a day or two later no inquest is likely to be held. But very little seems to be known here about the dead man. He is said to have been 56 years old, had been married twice, his first wife dying a number of years ago. He had been divorced from the woman who figured in his second matrimonial experience. He was born in Ferris township, Montcalm county, coming into this county about 30 years ago and locating at Palo. During the past winter he had been engaged in cutting a large tract of timber into firewood up in Isabella county for Frank Taft and Alex Robertson. Even to these men Allen seemed somewhat of a mystery and they never seemed to be able to learn much of his past. A son, Leo Vance Allen, Orange township; a brother, William Allen, Mancelona; a brother, Fred Allen, Star Route Ionia, and a sister, Sarah Markey, where the deceased made his home, survive. There are numerous other relatives. Funeral services for the unfortunate man will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the Bradley Mortuary. Interment will be made in Tuttle cemetery.
