Lela Allerding 59, Passed Away Friday
Mrs. Lela Allerding, 59, of Rte.2, Woodland, retired telephone operator, passed away
Friday evening at St. Lawrence hospital, Lansing. She had been in ill health for several
years but had been hospitalized for three weeks.

She was born in Sunfield township and had spent much of her life in the area. She
began her career as a telephone operator in 1923 when she began work in the Sunfield
office of the General Telephone Company, later going to Portland in the office of the Michigan
Bell Company until the dial system was installed in 1950. Employed in the Ionia office
for a short time and at Lowell until the dial was installed and went to Charlotte where she
remained until about five years ago when she retired because of ill health.

She married Ethol First in August 1924 and he passed away in June 1948 and in 1953
she married Dennis Allerding who survives.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Walter
and Mrs. Merle (Janette) Sutherland Jr., both of Lake Odessa; three sisters, Mrs. Hervey
Runyan of Lake Odessa, Mrs. John Guy of Vermontville and Mrs. William Schael of
Sunfield; two brothers, Claud and Elmer Shaffer of Sunfield and two grandsons, Sam and Joel 
Sutherland.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Pickens Funeral chapel with
burial in the Portland cemetery. Rev. Blanche Neller of Portland officiated
