Almy, 72, of Lowell, formerly of South Ionia, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 in her home. She was born the fourth of nine children to Walter and Reva (Bolster) Moore on August 31, 1929. Her early childhood was full of the excitement that only a child of a large family can experience. Upon her high school graduation, she worked at a local drug store to supplement her savings for her education. In Sept. 1947, she entered Ionia Montcalm County Normal at Stanton. She completed this in the Spring of 1948 and accepted a position as a teacher/ janitor at Ware School in Lowell. She became the bride of Gerald L. Almy on Nov. 11, 1948. The couple lived in Ionia and Colleen continued teaching in Lowell until 1968 when she joined the Ionia Public School system as a teacher at Twin Rivers, until her retirement in 1989. Surviving are two sons: Jerry (Suzie) Almy of Grand Rapids, Alan (Sue) Almy of Lowell; daughter Lynda (Tom) Mannisto of Kaleva; five grandchildren, Gerrad, Josh, A.J., Taylor, and Ryan; two brothers, Walter (Margaret) Moore of Greenville, Maynard (Elaine) Moore of Lake Odessa; three sisters, Delores Heaven of Wyoming, Paula Havens of Calumet, Gaylene (Gordon) Furman of Muir; brother-in-law Harry Roundtree of Missouri; several nieces and nephews. Colleen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gerald Almy in 1972; an infant son; three sisters, Thelma Minikey, Marvel Roundtree, and Janice Moore; and her in-laws, Lawrence and Lorena Almy. At Colleen’s request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Lyons-Muir Library in Colleen’s memory. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
