He found her in a heap on the barn floor, nearly frozen and unable to speak. He ran to the house and called the neighbors by telephone and they hurried to his aid. The woman was carried into the house and a physician summoned, but she died of apoplexy before he arrived. The boy was put to bed, but it is feared that the little fellow has overtaxed his strength and that nothing can now save his life. Mrs. Almy, who was 34 years of age, and her little son, lived alone on their farm in Danby township, three miles from Portland, and the mother has been keeping night and day vigil at the bedside of her boy, nursing him through a long siege of smallpox. It is thought that her close attention to her boy overtaxed the mother’s strength and brought on apoplexy.
