The Portland Observer, Wednesday, January 29, 1890
Florence E., wife of Dr. R. W. Alton, and only child of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. 
Wolcott, died at the home of her parents in this village, on Wednesday 
morning, having gone from her own pleasant home to enjoy the care and company 
of her father and mother among the familiar surroundings of her childhood in 
the last days of her life, in the 36th year of her age.  Mrs. Alton was 
beloved by a large circle of friends, especially the young married people of 
this village, with whom she had been a favorite and in whose society she was 
much before she was compelled by ill health to forego their pleasures.

The funeral was held at the residence of her parents on Friday afternoon last, 
and was attended by as large a concourse of friends as could possibly gain 
admittance to the rooms, many who would have attested their affection by 
attending the last sad rites of their friend, being compelled to remain away 
only from lack of room.  The services were conducted by Rev. Frank McAlpine of 
Charlotte, and were impressive.

The floral offerings were the most elaborate ever seen here, among which were 
a beautiful floral pillow from the husband; a scroll with the name “Florence” 
in the center, the ground work of pure white, from the members of a social 
club of which the deceased was a member; a large bunch of white roses from the 
ladies’ literary club of which Mr. Alton was also a member, besides other 
offerings.  The last time the assembled friends looked upon the face of 
Florence I. Alton, was when she lay peacefully and as asleep, almost in the 
same spot where but a few short years ago she stood and consigned her heart 
and happiness to Dr. Robert W. Alton, and when this thought in all its 
significance dawned upon the friends, the well-springs of tears burst out 
afresh; but those who shed the tears were better for having done so. 

The deceased leaves a husband and one child, and they with the aged parents, 
have the heartfelt sympathy of every friend of the family in the loss of their 
wife, mother and daughter.  Thus has passed away one who, though suffering 
much, bore is uncomplainingly and was early resigned to the fate which she 
realized was surely and not slowly approaching.  Mrs. Alton had lived in 
Portland most of her life; had grown to womanhood, married and died among 
friends whose hearts are torn at the parting; but they know that all suffering 
is ended, and that Florence, in the goodness of her life and heart has passed 
to what must be a better world, and can say among their tears in extenuation 
of the taking off of one so loved, that “God doeth all things well.”
