Pearl Amphlett died at one o’clock this morning at her home in High street. Her death was the result of an attack of grip which began March fourth. She had partially recovered from this however, and was down town Wednesday. Wednesday night she suffered a relapse, the disease developing into spinal meningitis. Dr. Welch of Grand Rapids arrived on the afternoon train Friday and pronounced her condition hopeless. Miss Amphlett was born in Dakota and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Amphlett. She was brought to Ionia while a baby and has since lived here. She was 19 years of age and was taking a course in elocution and music at the Catholic academy, appearing there in the mid-winter recital and scoring a success on one of the principal roles. Miss Amphlett was especially gifted as an elocutionist and was a great favorite with a host of friends. She attended the Ionia High school until forced to leave on account of ill health, having a year and a half yet to go before the course was finished. She was an only child and has always been a loving and dutiful daughter and granddaughter, worshipped by the members of her family. Among her schoolmates she has been widely known and loved and her death will bring sorrow to a great number of friends. The funeral will be held Tuesday, from the M. E. church at 2 o’clock, interment in Highland Park cemetery. Subsequent Publication: Monday, March 23, 1908 The Sentinel stated Saturday that Pearl Amphlett died from spinal meningitis. This was an error the family desires corrected. The direct cause of her death was an abscess on the brain. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from the M. E. church. The casket will not be opened at the church, but friends can see the remains by calling at the house any time before that hour.
