Nov. 8, 2016 GERALD L. "JERRY" ANDERSON 1927-2016 Gerald L. "Jerry" Anderson, 89, longtime Belding resident and business owner passed away Friday Nov. 4, 2016 in Greenville. Jerry was born on August 4, 1927 in Belding the son of Walter and Florence (Shears) Anderson. He graduated from Belding High School with the Class of 1945. Following graduation Jerry proudly served his country during World War II serving in the United States Coast guard. After the war he came back to Belding and married his lifelong sweetheart, Marian "Chicky" Chickering on Jan. 8, 1949 in Belding. Together they started and owned Anderson Gravel and Excavating. Jerry created the catchy slogan used on all of the trucks; "Have gravel will travel." Everyone recognized the dark green dump trucks with the slogan on the side. Jerry knew the value of hard work, treating customers fairly, and did a lot of business with a handshake. He instilled that work ethic and values on his children and his sons who carry on the business. He was very active in Belding, being a life member of the Belding American Legion, a long-time member of the Belding VFW, the Belding Lions Club and the Belding-Ionia Masonic Lodge No. 355 F A & M. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, fast pitch softball and pool time at his home. Jerry had a big love of family and friends and always enjoyed card playing time with the Wednesday night card group. Jerry will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Jerry is loved and survived by his children, Cindy (Joe) Drysdale, Rick (Lisa) Anderson all of Belding, Mindy (Vernon) Adams of Sheridan, Susan Anderson of Belding, and Bud (Kim) Anderson of Greenville; his grandchildren, Kenny Darrow, Brook (Erik) Hansen, April Adams, Vernon Adams Jr., Candy (Dion) Sower, Fredrick (Becky) Straubel, Amanda (Ben) Blasius, Eric (Caitlin) Anderson, Garret Anderson, and Megan Anderson; several great- grandchildren; and many friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and wife Marian in 2012. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Committal prayers followed in River Ridge Cemetery, Belding. Military honors were given at the cemetery by the joint honor guard of the Belding American legion and VFW. Visitation was Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home. memorials may be given to Great Lakes Hospice, Shiloh Community Church or the Belding Freedom Wall.
