Mr. Andres left home and took the train here for Milwaukee Monday, Aug. 26, intending to visit his nephews in that city for a couple of weeks. He went to Grand Haven, intending to take the boat across the lake that night, and it is supposed walked off the dock into the river and his struggles not being heard, sank down to his death. On Tuesday morning word was received here that the body of a man was found in the river at Grand Haven, having on a suit of clothes bearing “The Hub Clothing Store, Belding,” label and giving other descriptions, also that in his pockets were found a conductor’s receipt for fare paid from Belding to Grand Rapids, a ticket to Milwaukee and $26. It was learned that Mr. Andres had not been heard from since leaving home and the body was thought to be him. His son, John Andres, was so sure of it that he and Alfred Jonas left for Grand Haven at three o’clock in the afternoon, arriving there in the evening. The body had been taken to the cemetery for burial by the officials, but when Mr. Andres and Mr. Jonas appeared and fully identified the remains they were placed in a metallic casket and brought home on the first train, coming by way of Saranac on the Grand Trunk road. It was ascertained that Mr. Andres had eaten supper at a restaurant in Grand Haven and also purchased a sandwich to eat on the boat; this was tied up in a handkerchief and his hand was still clutching it when the body was taken from the water. Mr. Jonas is of the opinion that in walking along the dock to take the boat he stopped off into one of the slips and sank in deep water. The ending of his life in this tragic manner was sad indeed, made more so by the thought that he was on a pleasure trip. He had lived in Keene for about thirty-two years, coming there from Germany, and leaves a wife and five children, John and Peter Andres, Anna Gondolf, Kate Tillman of Beal City and Mary Haney, who lives in the West. The funeral occurred this morning at the Catholic church in Miriam, Fr. Zindler officiating.
