At the age of three he came with his parents to Michigan, where they settled on the homestead just south of their present residence. On this farm, his childhood days were spent and he grew to manhood, and assisted his father on the farm. On the 4th day of May, 1874 he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Harriet Frantz, his now bereft and deeply sorrowing companion. This happy union was blessed with three children, Mrs. Anna Cummins, who now resides on the old home farm, Mrs. Glennora Kloss, who resides near Ionia, and Bertha, who passed to the Great Beyond at the age of 23. Together with these two living children he leaves a loving wife, one sister, Mrs. Alice Bower, of San Pedro, California, and four grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. In his passing Odessa loses a sterling man, and the community a kind, accommodating and courteous neighbor. In him his companion loses an affectionate husband, the children a loving father, and his many friends a kind and true-hearted friend. In July, 1914, he was quite suddenly taken with a stroke of paralysis and after the best of medical skill was administered he was taken to Butterworth hospital, Grand Rapids, and an operation was performed to removed a supposed obstruction in the stomach. From this he rallied and partially regained his health so he could be around but, about three weeks ago he was again overtaken by the supposed same affliction, from which there seemed no help, and the Master called him on up higher to that land from whose bourne no traveler returns.
