The particulars are as follows: She had been sick for some time with rheumatic fever, having considerable pain in her shoulder which finally settled in her side. On Sunday night the Doctor visited a patient, returning between 12 and 1 o’clock. Mrs. Armour desired an opiate, saying she could sleep; the Doctor answered, “pretty soon.” A child crying, he went to another room to quiet it and while doing so fell asleep. He awoke about 3 o’clock, went immediately to his wife’s room and found her in a comatose state which he knew to be the effect of opiates. In a chair by the bedside stood a bottle of Dover powders which he had left on a bureau in the room. He used all remedies that could be thought of, such as cold applications, and walking about the yard, which was continued with the assistance of neighbors and Dr. Connor until 4:30 p.m. Monday, but without avail. At an inquest held on Tuesday before Esq. Gage a verdict was rendered that deceased came to her death by an over-dose of opium in the form of Dover powders administered by her own hand. The jurors wish it understood that the powder was taken to relieve pain and allow her to sleep. Her parents, daughter and son-in-law arrived here on Tuesday and departed Wednesday morning for her old home 10 miles south-west of Hastings, where she will be buried.
