ARMOUR, ODESSA PIONEER, DIED FRI. Monroe ("Roe") Freeman Armour, 83 who came to Lake Odessa in 1887 as the village was being platted and who conducted an inter-city dray service connection Ionia and Barry counties before the advent of railroads in the community, died at his home here early Friday following many years of failing health. He had been retired from the transfer business since 1925 and had been partially paralyzed for 30 years. He came to Lake Odessa from Hope township in Barry county. Born February 2, 1861, in Erie, Pa., he came to Hope township with his parents when a child. On January 25, 1880, he married Miss Alma I. Robinson of Hope township and they moved to Lake Odessa on October 25, 1887. Mr. armor established his draying and freight transfer business connecting Lake Odessa with the little outlying hamlets and Saranac, Ionia and Hastings. After the railroad was put through he localized his business in Lake Odessa, continuing until 1925 when ill health compelled his retirement. He had served the village as village marshall several different terms. In 1940 Mr. and Mrs. Armour celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with an "open house" at their home here. Surviving besides the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Norton in Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Howard D. Poff in Lake Odessa; four sons, Barrett H. Boyd, and Ford D., all of Lansing, and Fay in Lake Odessa; three brothers, Martin at Augusta, Robert in Battle Creek, and Hamilton at Delton: 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Wortley & Baine chapel Monday afternoon with the Rev. Charles E. Thies, pastor at Central Methodist church, officiating, and the sons acting as pallbearers.
