After a few years her parents moved to Edmore, where they made their home, and where she finished her education in the Howe district school. She was united in marriage to Reuben Edson Arnold of Ionia, on February 28th, 1883, where they made their home until the fall of 1897, whence they moved to Marion, where they resided until 1909, when they had a desire to see the Golden West where they remained but one year, returning to Ionia to make their future home, where she died on December 20, 1915. She was the oldest daughter of five children born to Rev. Zephaniah and Laura Gates, all having preceded her to the better land, except two brothers, Herbert C. of Edmore and Harry P. of Grand Rapids. To this union were born four children, who are left with their father to mourn her death, Lee Edson of Ionia, Ernest Melvin of Marion, Millie Caroline Hoover of Marion and Mabel Grace Kirby of Ionia, besides many friends. She became a member of the Baptist church in Saranac twenty-three years ago, in which church she remained loyal until last spring, when she united with the Church of Christ. She has always been a devoted worker in the W.C.T.U. She was also a member of Ionia Rebekah lodge, which order attended in a body. Flowers in profusion but reflected the beauty and fragrance of the many kind deeds which adorned her life, which will still remain in the hearts of those who knew her. The funeral service was held at the home at 114 South Dexter street, conducted by her pastor, Rev. R.B. Chapman. After a brief impressive talk she was taken to Saranac and laid to rest beside her sister, who preceded her eighteen years ago.
